Black Horse Flag
The Black Horse flag was long identified with Marine Salvage in the United
States. Originally flown in 1860 on Capt. I.J. Merritt's first salvage
vessel, the flag was designed to honor the "Pony Express of the Beaches" and
the founders of organized marine salvage operations. In those days, long
before radio, local agents of the marine insurance underwriters, usually
coastal farmers and fishermen, dashed by horseback to the nearest alarm
point to summon aid whenever they sighted a vessel in distress.
